Workshop 2019
The broad spectrum of disorders of the immune system and cancer associated with Epstein-Barr Virus
EBV was the first human tumor virus discovered, to date, it is considered the main cause of B-cell lymphomas in children and in immunocompromised individuals. It has also been associated with T-cell and NK-cell lymphomas, carcinomas of the nasopharynx and stomach, and leiomyosarcomas. More recently, innate errors of the immune system have also been described that predispose to EBV-associated cancer, but also to inflammatory/ autoimmune syndromes that could provide a cellular and molecular framework to explain the epidemiological, clinical and experimental evidence supporting an association between the virus and systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune hepatitis, irritable bowel disease, etc. This workshop aims to cover the evidence that associates the virus to this broad spectrum of diseases and provide technical tools for the identification of EBV in biological samples.
The workshop is directed to General Physicians, Pediatricians, Immunologists, Infectologists, Pathologists, Researchers, and Postgraduate, Undergraduate Students and Laboratory technicians.
